Roye Okupe was born in Lagos, Nigeria. As many young kids, Roye had a fascination with superhero’s. However, there seemed to be little diversity in the superhero narratives. Now years later, Roye lives in Rockville, Maryland. He decided to provide the next generation with a new hero to look up to.
Seeing not one hero comes from Africa (there are even mutant turtle superhero’s!), Roye created E.X.O: a superhero story about redemption, set in a futuristic 2025 Africa. Together with a dedicated team of Nigerians (Ayodele Elegba, Sunkanmi Akinboye, Raphael Kazeem and Godwin Akpan), Roye is designing a book that not only shows how cool Africa can be, but also educates young African children on the possibilities they have. The result is E.X.O. part one, a 130 page full color graphic novel.
The comic is available in August this year. But it’s not only a book: there is an E.X.O animation movie on it’s way. What super hero does not have it’s own animation movie, right?
